Mavericks Hockey Club Launches at Ice Realm Carlsbad, Ushering in a New Era for Local Hockey

Carlsbad, CA – March 14, 2025 – The local hockey community is about to experience an electrifying new chapter with the launch of the Mavericks Hockey Club, based out of Ice Realm Carlsbad. This exciting new club brings elite-level coaching, professional development, and a clear pathway for players to reach their highest potential—all while establishing a unique identity for Carlsbad hockey families.

Led by Club President Fred Nelson, a veteran in hockey leadership and player development, alongside Vice President Jen Rader, an experienced rink professional and administrator, the Mavericks Hockey Club boasts a top-tier coaching staff and experienced hockey professionals dedicated to elevating the game for young athletes. With an unwavering commitment to skill development, competitive excellence, and community engagement, the Mavericks are poised to set a new standard in Southern California youth hockey.

Spring Development & Tryouts for the 2025-26 Season

The Mavericks Hockey Club is hitting the ice immediately with Spring Club Development Programs already in motion. Looking ahead, the club will host official tryouts in June for the following teams:

  • 8UB, 8UA, 10UB, 10UA, 12UA, 12UAA, 14UA, 14UAA

This transition marks an important milestone for Carlsbad’s hockey community. Since 2014, the local club at Ice Realm Carlsbad has operated as the Jr. Reign, a respected program that has developed countless young athletes. The Mavericks Hockey Club is committed to honoring and supporting Jr. Reign families through this evolution, ensuring a seamless transition while providing enhanced opportunities for growth and competition.

A Vision for Unrestricted Player Growth

With the birth of the Mavericks, Carlsbad players will no longer be a satellite club of the Jr. Reign based in the Inland Empire. Instead, the Mavericks will operate as an independent powerhouse, fully dedicated to developing players to their highest ambitions without restriction—from grassroots hockey all the way to the elite Tier 1 level.

Furthermore, the Mavericks are proud to be an integral part of Team San Diego AAA Hockey, a collaborative effort between the Mavericks, Jr. Gulls, and SDIA San Diego Clubs. This strategic consolidation ensures that players in San Diego have a clear and competitive path to AAA Tier 1 hockey, and ultimately, to junior hockey at the highest levels. Mavericks players will have direct access to the San Diego Sabers, the USPHL Junior A team that also calls Ice Realm Carlsbad home, offering a seamless transition from youth to junior-level competition.
